#BehindFlamefall part 2/7: Antigone Ok, you may ha #BehindFlamefall part 2/7: Antigone
Ok, you may have guessed this one 😜 A little background behind the namesake: “Annie short for Antigone" is a character name I've had on the back burner since I was a kid, when I wrote stories about a girl frustrated with people mispronouncing her full name as 'Anty-gon'. I'm not sure how I found the name originally, but I do remember the first time I read the play--behind the counter of the ice cream shop where I worked the summer between high school and college, during the rainy afternoons when the tourists stayed home. It was one of those plays that seems not to speak to you across millennia as to shout: Antigone is at once faithful and brash, headstrong and loving, the original Unlikeable Female Character. I was riveted.

A few years later, Antigone sur Aela met the page. In the Aurelian Cycle, I wanted her name to take on meaning from the original legendary figure. To give away exactly the ways that Annie steps more into her namesake's shoes in Flamefall would be spoiling. But I will say that both elements of Annie's story, and actual lines from Sophocles' play, make it into Flamefall in ways that I'm extremely proud of and excited to share with y'all.

HINT: It is an animated musical, but it's NOT Disney.

A first #BehindFlamefall post. I wanted to pull ba A first #BehindFlamefall post. I wanted to pull back the curtain (spoiler-free) on some of the places, books, and personal experiences that inspired the sequel to Fireborne. I’ll try to share at least one #BehindFlamefall post a week from now to Flamefall’s release on March 23.

#BehindFlamefall part 1/7: Mont-Saint-Michel

Flamefall takes us to the northern island of New Pythos, where Julia Stormscourge grew up with her family in exile. The image I drew on most was that of Mont-Saint-Michel, the medieval monastery on an island off the coast of Normandy—cold, blustery, steep and stony. My dad’s family is from near there, and it’s our go-to day trip, but I’ve found that no matter how many times we go, it still feels a little unearthly.

New Pythos is like Callipolis rewound ten years—instead of post-revolutionary, it’s still feudal, still chafing under the rule of the dragonlords, and dreaming of more. Griff, a lowborn local who has been trained as a squire for the dragonlords, is torn between the modicum of privilege he's attained as Julia's lover—and his loyalty to his people, whom Julia's oppress. In the aftermath of the events that end Book 1, he has newfound freedom to decide his path.

When you read about Griff's struggles on New Pythos, picture Mont-Saint-Michel plus dragons.
